Building on the success of our Law & Artificial Intelligence Certificate (LAIC) program, LAIC Lab offers a deep dive into the logic underlying legal AI. Unlike our general LAIC program, which provides an overview of AI Governance, the technnological foundations of AI, and the intersection of intellectual property and AI, the Lab offers direct, hands-on exploration of AI systems.

The Lab is an intensive three-day program focused on using, testing, and implementing generative AI in different types of legal work. Participants attending the Lab will build practical workflows, evaluate AI outputs, and address the professional questions that matter in practice, including accuracy, confidentiality, supervision, disclosure, and governance.

What you’ll be able to do by the end

You will be able to:

• go beyond “chat” to build repeatable workflows (playbooks, checklists, evaluation frameworks)
• evaluate AI tools and vendors like someone who can lead technical change (not just use products)
• make build vs. buy decisions, and explain them to legal and technical stakeholders
• spot and manage privilege, confidentiality, conflicts, and competence issues in AI-augmented practice
  

Participants who complete the program will receive a Law & Artificial Intelligence Lab Certificate of Completion from UC Law San Francisco. This is a continuing legal education professional development program. In addition to the certificate of completion, CA MCLE credit will be available. The total number of hours is yet to be detemrinedm but will include at least 2 hours of Legal Ethics and 2 hours of Technology in the Practice of Law.

Who will be teaching

Prof. Damien Charlotin - of, among many other things, the hallucination database fame, will anchor the teaching team as Co-Director of the Lab, alongside Profs. Tal Niv, Drew Amerson & Cornelia Kutterer. The Lab will also feature guest lecturers from the world of practice, bringing current perspectives on how legal professionals and institutions are approaching AI.

Fees

• Regular Fee: $3,000
• Alumni Fee: $2,500 (for alumni of UC Law San Francisco)
• Discounted Fee: $1,500 (for non-profit, government, and academic affiliations)
  

Cancellation and Substitution Policy: All cancellation and participant substitution requests must be made in writing and may be sent via email to lexlab@uclawsf.edu. Participant substitutions may be made at any time at the election of the organization. Full refunds are available for all registrants if cancelled before November 1, 2026. For cancellations between November 1 and November 15, 2026, 50% of the registration fee will be refunded. The remaining 50% of the fee can be applied toward a future LAIC session. There are no refunds for cancellations after November 15, 2026.
